advent day one

Advent Day ONE~

May the Lord, when He comes, find us watching and waiting.

As we turn the page of our calendars to December 1st, what words come into our heads?
Shopping...wrapping presents… visiting… singing….baking…..organizing…..

Christmas has become a season of doing.
In fact, many of us have so much to do that we face the season with dread, not joy.
The angels’ message may as well have been:

“Spend on Earth, and stress to all men.”

Advent has always been a time in the church calendar not for shopping,
rehearsing carols and baking mince pies (although I’m sure in many churches it has become just that!)
But of watching and waiting.

As we enter this advent season, lets spend some time each day watching and waiting.
Waiting on God, to hear what He has to say about Christmas.
Watching those around us, seeing beyond what they do to who they are.
Watching the way our world celebrates Christmas, and seeing beneath the frenzy to the need for good news.
Waiting to see God, to see Him enter into His creation, to see Him come as
Emmanuel, God incarnate, Jesus our Saviour.

So that once again we hear the angels say “Peace on Earth, goodwill to men.”

Now is the time to awake out of sleep,
For the night is far spent and the day is at hand.
Now is our salvation nearer than when we first believed,
For the night is far spent and the day is at hand.
Let us therefore cast off the works of darkness and put on the armour of light
For the night is far spent and the day is at hand.

Watching and waiting
