Joy

And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night.  An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. Today in the town of David a Saviour has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord. This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.”
                                       Luke 2: 8-12

When the angels appeared to those Bethlehem shepherds, they were terrified. The promise of joy must have seemed unlikely, but the call of the angels spurred them into action and they hurried off to Bethlehem to find out more for themselves. Paul knew all about the seismic effects of God interrupting your life, turning upside down your plans and presenting you with news that seemed terrifying rather than exciting. And yet, just as the shepherds discovered, it is news of great joy. Despite all the difficulties which Paul faced as he set to work sharing the gospel, his letters bubble over with the joy he knew.

Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near. Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
                                          Philippians 4:4-7

Whatever is on your mind today, find a quiet space and pray Paul's prayer. Present your requests to God, knowing that He is near. Leave your anxieties with Him, and even if you don't understand it, let His peace enfold you.

And receive joy!
